NEVALA
Nevala is one of the oldest habitats in Kontiolahti Heraniemi in Finland. It has been inhabited since 1700.
The Nevala Estate was completely rebuilt after 2001. Presently it consists of the main house and nine smaller log outbuildings. Nevala is surrounded by clean and beautiful nature and is located in the middle of the hills of Koli. The estate is ideally located for outdoor activities. For history oriented people we offer an authentic old fashioned way of living in historical surroundings. We provide B&B, different guided outdoor activities: hiking, biking, canoeing trips, meal services and traditional healing remedies. The guided tours start conveniently from the Nevala yard.
We are nature preservationists in all our functions. Since we are partners with Koli National Park, we are qualified to use the Europark-label.
Sustainable development values are visible in our everyday life in many ways. In the main house we have used almost entirely recycled building materials such as doors, windows, panels etc. The interior was also decorated with only old furniture. The house is even insulated with traditional material from linen. We have composting toilets and we recycle almost all of our waste. Heat is provided by wood burning stoves, so our electricity consumption is very low. We try to minimize our use of cars and we favour local produce. Potatoes, onions, vegetables, meats and herbs and berries are mostly home grown and biodynamic.
The welfare of our animals is very close to heart. Our sheep are each individuals and not just future furry meals! All our animals have names and most have wonderful life stories attached to them. The sheep and our goat are genetically old heritage Finnish breeds. Our horses graze freely and have an open stable to come and go. We have two friendly livestock guarding dogs and a collie and an Islandic sheepdog as eager shepherd dogs.
The Hostess, Ulla Miettinen, and the Host Jyrki Suikkanen of the Nevala Estate warmly wish you welcome!
